The University of Pittsburgh achieved Gold Bicycle Friendly University status from the League of American Bicyclists, upgrading from a Silver designation earned in 2022.
Achieving the Gold designation — a goal detailed in the Pitt Sustainability Plan — recognizes Pitt’s commitment to making biking to, from and around campus safer, more accessible and more integral to how University community members get around. From infrastructure upgrades to education programs, Pitt’s biking culture has grown rapidly in recent years.
In the fiscal year 2025, Pitt people took nearly 340,000 trips with POGOH, Pittsburgh’s bike share program, up 65% from the previous year. The University also continues to improve its biking amenities by upgrading bike racks across campus, adding new Fix-It stations and building indoor bike storage rooms at Sutherland Hall, BioForge and the Fifth and Halket Building. The Public Health Building garage also added e-bike charging this year.
Recent counts also show that Posvar Passage, home to the Pitt Bike Cave, has become one of the most highly trafficked bike and pedestrian corridors in the city.
Education and engagement remain at the core of Pitt’s bicycling progress. In 2024, League Cycling Instructors Sarah Sleva, assistant director of outdoor and adventure pursuits, and Lucy Klug (A&S ’22), mobility specialist, were named as BikePGH’s Educators of the Year for expanding on-bike classes and campus biking events. Those efforts have been maintained in part by the Pitt Bike Cave, which also offers affordable bike sales, repair workshops, classes and group rides.
