Atilla Soran, clinical professor of surgery in Pitt’s School of Medicine and breast surgical oncologist at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, was featured as the March 2026 National Lymphedema Network (NLN) Community Champion for his work in prevention and surgery for the chronic condition.

Lymphedema is characterized by swelling in the arms or legs, most commonly occurring in cancer patients whose lymph nodes have been removed or damaged during treatment. Soran is among a small number of physicians in the U.S. using lymphatic mapping with indocyanine green dye during and after cancer surgery to identify and preserve arm lymphatics, enabling early intervention. His research shows 96% of his patients remain free of clinical arm lymphedema over three years.

He also serves on the NLN’s Medical Advisory Committee, which guides national best practices for lymphedema diagnosis and treatment, and was named president-elect of the Senologic International Society in November 2025.
