Five University of Pittsburgh students have earned the SMART Scholarship-for-Service, which provides merit-based scholarships from the U.S. government to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students seeking degrees in science, math, technology and engineering.

“I’m so proud of our awardees, who this year have set a record for the most Pitt students offered a SMART Scholarship-For-Service, a prestigious and substantial award,” said Lesha Greene, director of scholarships and post-graduation success in the David C. Frederick Honors College. “These are all talented and dedicated students, and I’m confident they will prove to be assets to our country.”

Recipients of the SMART scholarship — which stands for Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation — receive full tuition and annual stipends from the U.S. Department of War, and they also participate in summer internships. After graduation, they are offered civilian employment with the department.

The Pitt awardees are:

Soumik Chakraborty, a senior mechanical engineering major in the Swanson School of Engineering and Frederick Honors College

Lance Long, who is studying bioengineering in the Swanson School’s MS-to-PhD program

Ethan Napolitan, a senior mechanical engineering major in the Swanson School

Andrew Stricklin (ENGR ’23), a mechanical engineering PhD student in the Swanson School

Dominic Zeto, a sophomore mechanical engineering major in the Swanson School and Frederick Honors College

The next application cycle for the DoW-SMART Scholarship-for-Service opens Aug. 1, with applications due Dec. 4.
