Chancellor Joan Gabel was named to Forbes’ 50 Over 50 list

Chancellor Joan Gabel was named to this year’s Forbes 50 Over 50 list for her outstanding leadership and vision guiding the University of Pittsburgh.

The sixth annual list spotlights women over age 50 of notable influence in the realms of innovation, impact, investment and lifestyle. Gabel was recognized in the category of impact, standing alongside notable names like actress and entrepreneur Jennifer Garner and Good360 CEO Cinira Baldi. Nominations to the Forbes 50 over 50 list are sourced from the public as well as Forbes’ editorial reporting and recommendations from MSNBC’s Know Your Value community.

“Impact is integral to the mission and identity of the University of Pittsburgh. While it’s an honor to be named to the Forbes 50 over 50 list, my recognition reflects the entire Pitt community’s talent and capacity to drive possibilities for our students, for our research and for our community,” Gabel said.

The Forbes piece described Gabel as steering one of the nation’s “leading public research universities through an ambitious strategic plan focused on student success, research, innovation and community impact.” Forbes also celebrated her expansion of affordability initiatives, including the Pitt Regional Campus Tuition Pledge, and championing of the University’s achievements in technology, innovation and health.

Gabel currently holds leadership roles with the U.S. Council on Competitiveness, Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and Fulbright Scholar Advisory Board, and serves on the boards of UPMC, the Association of American Universities and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. A sought-after national and international speaker, she advises leaders in industry and government on leadership, risk management, insurance and governance.
