Each summer, alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the Swanson School of Engineering tee off to benefit the Swanson School’s general scholarship fund. But this year, due to COVID-19, challenges such as booking the course, serving meals, and the one-person-per-golf cart rule inspired the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs to turn to e-sports.

The same friendly competition that usually takes place in the open air will instead be held virtually this year, with plenty of opportunities for engagement thanks to the World Golf Tour website and Zoom. The event will take place on Friday, June 19, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. ET. The deadline to register is Wednesday, June 17, and space is limited.

The entire Swanson School community and friends are invited to participate in the one-hour gameplay. Foursomes will be broken out into teams via Zoom. If you are not heckling your teammate, you will be sharing your screen to take your shot.

“One of the benefits this year is that everyone can participate, even if physically attending our outings wasn’t possible in the past,” says U.S. Steel Dean of Engineering James R. Martin, II. “Even though it’s not the same, and we look forward to getting back out in the open air for future events, we know this will still be a fun experience and a way to connect with one another in a difficult time.”

The annual event typically hosts anywhere from 80 to 120 golfers with a shotgun start after breakfast, and the round of golf is followed by an awards luncheon celebration. This year, Dean Martin will welcome everyone virtually before the event starts at 10:30 a.m. ET.

Registrations are still rolling in, with our farthest golfer hailing from Nevada.

While golfers cannot use their favorite driver or their reliable irons for this particular tournament, they can choose 500 credits worth of virtual gear from the online Pro Shop to use for the competition. And while the play may be virtual, the prizes are still quite tangible—the three top-scoring teams will win prizes that will be mailed post-event.
