By all accounts, hate crimes directed against vulnerable groups are on the rise in contemporary America. What are the causes of this criminal activity? Can anything be done to stop it? And what are the limits posed in resisting organized hate groups and those that promote violence against and hatred of others, given the constitutional protections of free speech?
