The Offices of the Chancellor and Provost are accepting proposals for funding in the Pitt Seed Projects grant program. Now in its fourth year, the Pitt Seed initiative provides funding for well-defined projects that directly reflect the goals of the Plan for Pitt and will play an instrumental role in transforming the University as a whole.

“It is exciting to announce the call for this year’s Pitt Seed Grant funding proposals. Since its inception, this funding opportunity has brought forth significant efforts that have advanced the priorities of the Plan for Pitt and realized some truly impressive outcomes,” said Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor Ann E. Cudd.

Two key priorities for 2021

The provost’s office will host a series of virtual information sessions for interested Pitt Seed applicants. Attendance is not required for successful submissions. Applicants can also email any questions to pittseed [at] pitt.edu.

Proposed projects can include a range of activities, including: research ideas, academic programs, process improvement, diversity, community and industry partnership development, outreach, methods of teaching and learning, workshops, lectures, and enhancing the student experience.

Chancellor Patrick Gallagher and Cudd have identified two key priorities—diversity and inclusion, and institutional resilience—and the initiative will give preference to projects that address these priorities.

“This year—a year filled with both deep challenges and broad opportunities—we are particularly interested in proposed projects that promise to propel our efforts forward in these areas,” said Cudd.

Proposals that address the diversity and inclusion priority will create a more inclusive and engaged curriculum or campus community for the full range of students and faculty the University seeks to attract. Applications that focus on institutional resilience will work to innovate with an eye toward the future as universities around the world evolve to deliver new kinds of educational experiences that are responsive to the changing times.

All projects must adhere to University policies, and this year those include policies that Pitt developed in light of COVID-19. The application has a new question that asks applicants to outline a project implementation adjustment plan that briefly describes how funded projects will adapt in response to potential changes in the University’s operational posture.
