Tree of Life

A crowd of people standing together
In 2019, Pitt social work faculty surveyed the mental health well-being of staff at social service agencies and schools as the community approached the first anniversary of the Tree of Life tragedy. The data led to enhanced training and treatment for staff at these agencies, two years later.
The University of Pittsburgh and the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh partnered to bring the traveling installation “Lest We Forget” to Pitt’s campus. As community members grapple with the memory of last year’s shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood, the exhibit stands as an impossible-to-ignore testament to the history of the Holocaust and its survivors.

Drawing strength and inspiration from each other, thousands of people congregated Monday at the Cathedral of Learning to honor those killed Oct. 27 in Squirrel Hill.
