The American Academy of Arts and Sciences announced the election of its new members, and University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Emeritus Mark Nordenberg is among the honorees.
Nordenberg joins nearly 250 members elected in this year’s class, who have distinguished themselves in academia, the arts, industry, policy, research and science.
During his Pitt career, now spanning more than 45 years, Nordenberg has held a succession of key leadership positions, including dean of the School of Law and chancellor of the University. In addition to serving as chair of Pitt’s Institute of Politics, he currently serves as director of its Dick Thornburgh Forum for Law and Public Policy and holds the special faculty rank of Distinguished Service Professor of Law.
“It is humbling to have been elected to membership in an organization founded in 1780 with a roster of original members that included George Washington and Benjamin Franklin,” Nordenberg said. “It also is a great honor to be included in the company of such legendary figures in the history of Pitt as Jonas Salk and Tom Starzl, as well as with so many highly accomplished current colleagues, including Chancellor Joan Gabel.”
“Chancellor Emeritus Mark Nordenberg’s election into the Academy is a wonderful recognition of a nearly half-century career as a servant leader for the University of Pittsburgh and the community as a whole,” said Chancellor Joan Gabel. “I want to congratulate Mark on this well-deserved honor, and I look forward to officially welcoming him into the Academy this fall.”
The inductees will be honored in October during ceremonies in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
