Brian Dubenion is Pitt’s inaugural associate dean of student culture and community

Brian Dubenion has been appointed as the University of Pittsburgh’s inaugural associate dean of student culture and community. With more than 15 years of student affairs expereince, Dubenion will provide visionary leadership to advance Pitt’s commitment to a campus environment grounded in respect, accountability and ethical student engagement. His approximate start date is Aug. 18.

Reporting to Associate Vice Provost and Dean of Students Marlin Nabors, Dubenion will lead student conduct processes, manage complex behavioral concerns and coordinate University-wide student support responses. He will develop guidelines, procedures and educational initiatives promoting community well-being and restorative practices. Dubenion will also chair the behavioral intervention team, represent Student Affairs on the threat assessment team, and supervise the Fraternity and Sorority Life, Office of Inclusion and Belonging, PittServes and Student Conduct departments. 

Most recently, Dubenion served as associate vice president for student success and dean of students at Lincoln University, where he provided strategic leadership for residence life, student engagement and student conduct. Earlier in his career, Dubenion held leadership positions at Buffalo State University and Ithaca College, where he developed award-winning programs in student success, residence life and cultural engagement. A respected thought leader, he is a co-author of  “The Learning Community Experience in Higher Education: High-Impact Practice for Student Retention” and was honored with the SUNY Buffalo State Outstanding Graduate Alumni Award in 2023. 

A proud first-generation college student, Brian was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. He holds a Master of Science in Student Personnel Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, both from Buffalo State University.
