Hemispheric Conversations: Urban Art Project (HCUAP) is hosting three visiting artists in residence as part of its 2025 programming.

Venazir Martinez, of the Philippines, and Musa 71 and Harry Bones, both of Spain, will arrive in Pittsburgh on Sept. 5 and host two weeks of free events in the city.

The artists will participate in a group exhibition, run a youth workshop at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and speak on a panel at the Andy Warhol Museum. In addition, they will create mural works throughout in the city, culminating in a paint jam in Garfield.

HCUAP seeks to create platforms for conversation and education about urban art production — graffiti, street art and muralism, among other genres — to explore aesthetic and historical connections among postindustrial cities like Pittsburgh, Chicago and León Guanajuato, México. Among the project’s organizers is Caitlin Bruce, associate professor in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Communication.

Funding for the residency is provided by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts as well as University of Pittsburgh's Global Studies Center and Nationalities Room and International Exchange Program.

All HCUAP events are free and open to the public:

  • Sept. 5-24: See the exhibit, “Entangled Histories: Urban Art and its Diasporas,” at 5015 Penn Ave.
  • Sept. 9: Introduce your teen to figure drawing and lettering techniques at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s East Liberty branch.
  • Sept. 12: Meet the artists during a talk at the Andy Warhol Museum.
  • Sept. 13-14: Practice the skills you’ve picked up during a Community Paint Jam at 4905 Penn Ave. The event runs from noon to 6:30 p.m. both days.
