The plot of land at 3401 Boulevard of the Allies is often referred to as “the former Quality Inn site.” But in this case, it isn’t just a Pittsburghese quirk. Since the hotel chain moved out of the building in 2020, nothing has happened on the site. But that will soon change.
On May 8, the University of Pittsburgh Board of Trustees approved a proposal for redevelopment of the property by Radnor Property Group. Radnor plans to build multifamily housing and a grocery store on the site.
“We are delighted to be engaged with our first initiative with the University of Pittsburgh,” said David Yeager, CEO and managing partner of Radnor Property Group. “We look forward to embarking on a successful, collaborative approach that will help bring more housing and vibrancy to the area.”
Pitt has owned the property since 1963 — when it was a Howard Johnson Motor Lodge — and began plans to redevelop the site after Quality Inn’s lease expired. While the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the work, Pitt used the time to gather invaluable community input about what Oakland residents would most like to see.
Lina Dostilio, Pitt’s vice chancellor for external relations, said, “This site is a key gateway to Oakland and its redevelopment is a significant contribution to the neighborhood and the Oakland Plan.”
“We take our position and responsibilities in the community very seriously,” shared Anish Kumar, vice chancellor for real estate. “Part of what makes this project remarkable and exciting is the focus on what Oakland residents need to thrive. Our primary goal is to support and enhance our neighborhood.”
Groundbreaking on the project is projected for late summer 2026.
