The University of Pittsburgh saw its largest-ever class of incoming first-year and transfer students begin their academic journeys at the Pittsburgh campus last week.

Campus was buzzing on Monday and Tuesday as move-in commenced. After getting settled, Panthers and their families got to know the University at Welcome Week events and activities, including guided walks around the Oakland neighborhood, speed-friending, mini tours of campus buildings and other informational sessions. At Tuesday’s First-Year Frenzy event, students bid their families farewell and connected with new friends while enjoying ziplining, games and prizes on the Cathedral Lawn.

On Wednesday, the Class of 2029 trekked up Cardiac Hill to the Petersen Events Center to kick off their college career with New Student Convocation. Later that night, a pep rally and drone show — a University first — welcomed the 6,400 new Panthers into the Pitt fandom.

The week of familiarization and festivities ended Sunday with Lantern Night, a 105-year-old University tradition in which alumni pass on the light of learning to a new class of Pitt students.
