McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine

The new initiative will focus on research and workforce development in space engineering, biomedicine and science.

The external relations manager for the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine will participate in the Appalachian Regional Commission’s extensive training program.

To date, there are fewer than 250 fellows of the academy throughout the world.

Current treatments for long segments of nerve damage only restore about 40-60% of motor function. Pitt researchers developed the nerve guide, and their studies showed that it restored about 80% of fine motor control.

To address the critical need for long-lasting heart valve replacements, a team of Pitt researchers created a mesh that harnesses the body’s own healing power.

Inspired by the inner workings of a mechanical pencil in grade school, Anna Balazs went on to launch a career that blurs the boundaries between the living and nonliving in engineering and biology.

This fall's competitions awarded more than $600,000 for faculty and student researchers. In addition, mentoring opportunities in the competitions offer researchers help in commercialization, which takes products from the lab into spaces like a doctor’s office or a factory.

Researchers hope the device will be a bridge to transplant or recovery in children with acute and chronic lung failure, allowing the children to move around and avoid being bedridden.
