16 Pitt undergraduates were named Gilman scholars

This spring, 16 University of Pittsburgh students were selected to receive the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.

This competitive national honor enables undergraduates with limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to the United States’ national security and economic prosperity. Now in its 24th year, the scholarship has supported more than 44,000 scholars worldwide.

This year’s winners and their destinations are:

  • Rachel Amanor, a junior in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences majoring in computational social science with a minor in linguistics (Italy)
  • Lincoln Baker, a junior in the Swanson School of Engineering majoring in mechanical engineering and physics (Germany)
  • Stacy Bediako, a senior in the Swanson School majoring in chemical engineering (Netherlands)
  • Jake Clark, a junior in the Swanson School majoring in mechanical engineering (Germany)
  • Phoebe Clouser, a junior in the Dietrich School majoring in psychology with a certificate in American Sign Language (Scotland)
  • Issabella Farah, a sophomore in the Dietrich School majoring in history of art and architecture and classics and minoring in Mediterranean archaeology (Italy)
  • Ella Hobbs, a sophomore in the Dietrich School majoring in actuarial mathematics and minoring in economics and applied statistics (Hungary)
  • Zion Jackson, a junior in the Dietrich School majoring in law, society and criminal justice and English and minoring in Spanish (United Kingdom)
  • Hannah Kang, a junior in the David C. Frederick Honors College and the Dietrich School majoring in microbiology and minoring in chemistry and neuroscience with a certificate in conceptual foundations of medicine (Austria)
  • Wiktoria Kopacz, a sophomore in the Dietrich School majoring in psychology and neuroscience with a certificate in conceptual foundations of medicine (Sweden)
  • Anna Lao, a sophomore in the School of Nursing’s baccalaureate program (Argentina)
  • An Le, a junior in the Dietrich School majoring in linguistics (Japan)
  • Bella Lirette, a junior in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences’ dietician nutritionist program (Italy)
  • Shekina Ngund, a sophomore in the Frederick Honors College and the Dietrich School majoring in biochemistry and minoring in chemistry (India)
  • Ayza Sayany, a senior in the Frederick Honors College and the Dietrich School majoring in psychology and minoring in business with a certificate in sports studies (United Kingdom)
  • Eric Yu, a junior in the Frederick Honors College and the School of Business majoring in business analytics and business information systems (Australia)

Housed in the Frederick Honors College, Pitt’s Office of National Scholarships supports undergraduates, graduate students and recent alumni from all Pitt schools and programs in applying for nationally and internationally competitive fellowships.
