The Plan for Pitt: Engage in Research of Impact

The University of Pittsburgh recently unveiled a sculpture of Thomas Starzl, “the father of organ transplantation,” near the Cathedral of Learning. Starzl is also featured in a new documentary with Pitt origins, titled “Burden of Genius.”

The most exciting professional collaboration in Gunduz Caginalp’s 34-year career at Pitt came in 2018, when he published a paper co-authored with his 24-year old son and Department of Mathematics visiting scholar, Carey Caginalp (A&S ’11).
The Modeling and Managing Complicated Systems Institute will use artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze massive data sets, helping to find new solutions to national security challenges, the aging process and the opioid epidemic.
