In 2019, Pitt social work faculty surveyed the mental health well-being of staff at social service agencies and schools as the community approached the first anniversary of the Tree of Life tragedy. The data led to enhanced training and treatment for staff at these agencies, two years later.

The University of Pittsburgh and the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh partnered to bring the traveling installation “Lest We Forget” to Pitt’s campus. As community members grapple with the memory of last year’s shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood, the exhibit stands as an impossible-to-ignore testament to the history of the Holocaust and its survivors.

This is a time of enormous grief for our Pittsburgh community. We have lost family members, colleagues, volunteers, teachers and friends, and this reality has left many of us struggling to carry on. But, even within the darkest moments of tragedy, there is a way forward.
