Brad Dicianno (A&S ’97, MED ’01), vice chair for research in the School of Medicine’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, won a Community Heroes Award from Community Living and Support Services (CLASS).

The Pittsburgh organization recognized Dicianno for his work with people in the Pittsburgh community diagnosed with spina bifida, a birth defect that prevents the spine and spinal cord from forming properly. His research focuses on developing and studying interventions targeted to improving health and wellness in individuals with this and other complex disabilities, including wheelchairs, mobile health and preventative care programs.

In addition to his roles in the School of Medicine, Dicianno is medical director of the UPMC Center for Assistive Technology, director of the UPMC Adult Spina Bifida Clinic, and medical director and COO of the Human Engineering Research Laboratories (HERL). He will be recognized with the award at the annual CLASS Community Heroes Awards Dinner on Oct. 28.
